Physio and Speech therapy

Recently, a very bold and out spoken YOU believer named Sally had a terrible stroke. She is only in her early 50s and has lost strength, the ability to use her right hand, and much of her speech and vocal skills. One of my team mates is a trained occupational therapist. Since hospital care here isn’t what we’re used to at home, she offered to use her skills to serve a sister in need. But my teammate has only lived in country for a few months and doesn’t have enough language to explain to her patient how to move or even what they are trying to do. So I tagged along as her translator. My years of personal physiotherapy gave me a little insight into what we were trying to accomplish. I brought along my language learning pictures and started doing simple speech therapy, practicing counting and naming the animals, or singing worship songs that she had memorized.

Unbeknownst to me, her husband is not a believer. I began chatting with him about how he was doing with the change, and how he was processing it in relation to his understanding of God’s perfect will. We talked about places in the Word and I even prayed with him. We continue to hope that the practical love we are showing to his wife will be a witness to him about the love that exists between believers. We also need to keep asking the Father for our sister’s health. Her recovery has been slow. The only full sentence Sally can say clearly is, “Jesus is my Saviour.”   It has been a real privilege to work with and learn from this sister.
