This classic book was suggested to me
as a source of comfort and inspiration while wading through the uncertainties
of transition and change. It is the story of the forced exodus of
cross-cultural workers in the 1950s when the communists took over in their
area. It is horrific to hear the trials and pain some of these workers faced;
and yet, they did so with grace that was given them from God alone. Humanly speaking, they could not have
endured; but their roots went down deep into Christ. It was His strength that sustained them. The title of this book came back to me again
recently as I was reading Psalm 1: “his delight is in the law of the Lord, and
on his law, he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in
its season, and its leaf does not wither.”
My year of ups and downs, of transition, change and forced exodus has
been mild compared to these faithful saints of the past. I have been reminded
again and again of how my heart and mind need to be focused on Him in all of
it, that I, too, would be a tree planted next to His stream, not looking at my
situations or circumstances for nourishment, but diving ever deeper into the
richness of His Word as my source of hope in a confusing time.
