Christmas might be over for most of
us—the gifts all opened, the cookies eaten, people have already moved on, a new
year is upon us—but it wasn’t that simple for Mary and Joseph. When they left
home, they were simply going to register, likely only taking what they needed
for the road. But the king’s jealously
and death threat on the children in the area forced them on a journey much
longer than they anticipated. The baby was born; but they were still on the
move from Bethlehem to their subsequent sojourning in Egypt—so much upheavel
and change! When Mary left Nazareth for Bethlehem, she likely had no idea
she would be gone for years. The Word tells us so little about these travels
and the associated struggles and yet we know for certain that God was with them
in all of the moving around. What a joyous truth for a soujourner like me to
cling to this Christmas season and beyond! I left my home a year ago, expecting
to only be gone three weeks. The road has been much longer than I anticipated but
the journeying was not alone. Emmanuel is still with me even after the ornaments
have been put back in the box for another year. He continues to guide me along
this winding road.
