U people in my new home use a different alphabet to write their language. Another worker, who is very skilled at photo shop wanted to reformate some beautiful scripture posters, but needed some help from someone who could read both scripts. It was meant to be a simple job of copying and pasting the verse into a excel document, but became much more complicated when I realized not all the chapter and verse numbers match up. Short explanation of translation theory: the trade language on one side of the border is based on the Hebrew text; the trade language on the other is based on the LXX (Greek translation of the Hebrew) which, especially in the Psalms, is numbered slightly differently. The U version of the Word has decided to take on the numbering system of the relevant trade language so that it seems consistent to locals. But this means the two U versions are numbered differently. Normally, in the Psalms, the matching verse was numbered one chapter less and one verse more. This, combined with the fact the U scripts read in different directions, made my simple task a little more challenging. Up one number, down one, left to right, right to left, after a while my head would start to spin.
